Mart Chmielewski is a historian and postdoctoral researcher. Their research focuses on labour history, gender and sexuality, and post-socialist transformations in Eastern Europe. They hold an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University and BAs in Sociology and Art History from the University of Warsaw.
In 2023, they were a Fulbright-Schuman Visiting Student Researcher at the European Institute, Columbia University. They completed their PhD in 2025 at the Department of History and Civilization, European University Institute, with a dissertation titled “The Bra Capital of Poland”: Socialism, Capitalism, and Economic Change in the Polish Lingerie Industry, 1940s–2020s.
Their thesis examines the shifting labour regimes in the Polish lingerie sector as a case study for the neoliberalization of Eastern Europe during the post-socialist period. Previously they taught a Queer Studies seminar at the Department of Sociology, Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, as part of the Global Teaching Fellowship Program.
